StoreSignal Feature

Competitor Discovery

Map your full competitive landscape across Google Play and the App Store — including the games you don't know about yet. StoreSignal surfaces hidden competitors gaining momentum in your category before they start taking your players.

The Short Version

Most studios only track the 5–10 competitors they already know about. But the games that are actually pulling players from your category right now aren't always the ones on your radar. Competitor Discovery automatically surfaces games competing in your space — ranked by how fast they're growing — so your competitive intelligence is never limited to what you thought to look for.

How It Works

Know Your Full Field, Not Just the Names You Already Know

Competitor Discovery doesn't require you to search for games one by one. It works outward from your category, genre, and target audience — surfacing every game competing for the same players, sorted by momentum.

The Core Idea

Your Competitive Landscape Is Bigger Than Your List

Most studios build their competitor list the same way: they think of the big names, add a few titles they've heard of, and call it done. That list gets checked occasionally, updated rarely, and never accounts for the games that launched six months ago and have quietly built real momentum in your category.

Competitor Discovery changes the premise. Instead of asking "which of my known competitors should I check today?", it asks "which games are competing in my space right now — and how fast are they growing?" The result is a live competitive map that updates itself across both Google Play and the App Store, not a static list that ages out the moment you close the tab.

Every game surfaced is ranked by install momentum and growth velocity — so you see the most dangerous competitors first, not the most famous ones.

Manual Research vs. Competitor Discovery

Manual Research

"I'll search the Top Charts in our category, note the top 10 names, and check their reviews every few weeks."

StoreSignal Competitor Discovery

"Here are 34 games competing in your category right now. 6 are showing breakout momentum. 3 of them launched in the last 60 days. You've never heard of any of them."

Discovery Signals

How StoreSignal Finds Your Competitors

Competitor Discovery uses four overlapping signals to map the competitive landscape around your game or category. Each signal captures a different dimension of competition — together they surface games that are genuinely competing for your players, not just games that share a keyword or a chart row.

Results are ranked by momentum strength, not alphabetically or by total download count — so rising competitors surface at the top, not buried under established names you've already accounted for.

Discovery Signal Stack

Category & Sub-Genre Match

Games in the same Google Play category and genre tier as your target — the primary competitive pool.

Audience Overlap Indicators

Games with install and retention patterns that suggest shared player demographics, even across sub-genre lines.

Keyword & Store Listing Proximity

Games competing for similar search terms, tags, and store positioning — revealing ASO-level competition you'd otherwise miss.

Install Momentum Ranking

Every competitor in the discovered set is ranked by current growth velocity — surfacing fast movers at the top of your list.

  • One-Click Add to Collections — track any discovered competitor instantly without leaving the view
  • Breakout Flagsbreakout signals surface directly on discovered competitors before you've even added them

Ranked by Growth, Not Fame

Competitors are sorted by install velocity and growth multiplier — not total downloads or chart position. The fastest-rising threat is always at the top.

Beyond Your Existing List

Most studios know 5–10 competitors by name. Competitor Discovery maps the full field — including newly launched games you've never heard of but are already gaining ground.

Use Cases

Who Uses Competitor Discovery — and Why

Knowing who you're competing against — in real time — changes how every team in a studio makes decisions.

Game Studios

Validate game concepts against live competition

Before greenlighting a new title, studios use Competitor Discovery to map who's already winning in the target category — and how fast the field is moving. A category with five fast-growing new entrants is a different investment decision than one that's been static for 18 months. Pair it with the AI Ideation Engine to turn competitive gaps into data-backed game concepts.

Publishers

Monitor the full competitive landscape across a portfolio

Publishers managing multiple titles across multiple categories need competitive awareness at scale. Competitor Discovery gives them a live view of the field around each title — without requiring a dedicated analyst to manually track every category every week.

UA & Growth Teams

Anticipate rising competitors before ad costs react

When a new competitor enters your category and starts gaining install momentum, UA auction prices for shared keywords eventually follow. Competitor Discovery gives growth teams an early read on rising competition — while there's still time to adjust bidding strategy, creative positioning, and targeting logic before costs spike. Product & Design Teams

Benchmark features against what's actually winning

Product teams use Competitor Discovery to understand which games are gaining real traction in their space — then dig into those titles' store listings, screenshots, and positioning to understand what's resonating with players. Real market signal, not guesswork.

FAQ

Common Questions

Does Competitor Discovery require me to specify competitors manually?

No. Competitor Discovery works outward from a category, genre, or seed game — not from a manual list you build yourself. You can specify a starting point (your game, a competitor, or a category), and the system maps the full competitive landscape automatically. You can still add any discovered game to a Collection with one click for ongoing tracking.

How does Competitor Discovery rank the games it surfaces?

Results are ranked by install momentum — specifically, growth multiplier (3-day install average relative to 30-day baseline) and rank velocity (how fast the game is climbing or holding position). This means the fastest-growing competitors surface first, not the ones with the largest historical download totals. A game that launched three months ago but is growing at 3× its baseline will rank above a well-known title with flat installs.

Can I use Competitor Discovery to find newly launched games in my category?

Yes. Competitor Discovery includes a New Release filter that isolates games launched within a configurable window (e.g., the last 30, 60, or 90 days) that are already showing install traction in your category. This is one of the most common use cases — identifying new entrants early, before they've had time to build a strong market position.

How is this different from just browsing the Google Play Top Charts?

Top Charts show you games that are already winning. Competitor Discovery shows you games that are about to win — ranked by growth velocity rather than current position. A game sitting at rank #200 with a 4× growth multiplier won't appear on any Top Chart today, but it will within the week. That's the gap Competitor Discovery fills. It also covers more of the field than Top Charts, which only surface the top 50–100 positions in any given category. Does Competitor Discovery cover all game categories on Google Play?

StoreSignal is purpose-built for mobile games and covers both Google Play and the Apple App Store, so Competitor Discovery maps the full competitive landscape across both storefronts — including sub-genre segmentation via Global Collections. If you're tracking non-game apps, StoreSignal isn't the right fit. If mobile games are your market, the coverage is comprehensive.
